Homily 413 – Why Are You Here? – Easter

by Shawn P. Tunink

Peter and JohnIt is so wonderful on Easter Sunday to see our churches filled. So many people, with so many different stories. Were you at church this morning? If so, why? Perhaps you’ve been at church all week. Maybe you haven’t been in church since last Easter. Maybe it’s been years. Everyone has their story.

Mary Magdalene was there on Easter morning. Why was she there? She thought she was coming to anoint the dead body of Jesus. But God had other plans. The reason she came was not the reason she was there. She was there to be the first witness to the empty tomb. She became the apostle to the apostles with the good news.

Peter and John were there on Easter morning. The last time we saw Peter, he was denying that he even knew who Jesus was. Today, we find him together with John, whom we last saw at the foot of the cross. Whatever they were doing was changed when Mary Magdalene arrived. Now they were racing to the tomb. Betrayal and denial no longer mattered. The cross on Calvary was no longer. Jesus was a live and that’s why Peter and John were there.

So what’s your story? Ultimately it doesn’t matter why you are here. The resurrection of Jesus is powerful. It changes your plans. The real reason you are here is known to God and is now given to you. You are called to be a witness of the resurrection. Even though you haven’t seen the risen body of the Lord, what you do from this moment on will be a witness. What kind of witness will your life give? Is Jesus real or not? Your life is the witness. That’s why you are here.
