Homily 455 – The Church Visible – 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked when you see them…” These words from the first reading should sound familiar. They are some of the corporal works of mercy which Jesus asks all of us to do. These words also teach us an important truth: Following Jesus is not just about how we think. It’s about what we do. Being a Christian looks like something.

Jesus intends that his Church be visible to the world. More importantly, the Church should help shape the world to become more like the kingdom of God. Jesus uses the images of salt and light to get this point across. Today’s homily expands upon these ideas.
