Standing Outside the Fire

Homily 503 | 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time | Year B

This is part three in a series of homilies on the Mass. In the past weeks, I’ve been looking at the various parts of the Mass in detail. However, today’s homily is something… a bit different. It’s definitely about the Mass. But while I was preparing something happened. Garth Brooks happened.

Yes, I went to see Garth Brooks (he’s a Country Music singer for those unfamiliar) last night at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, along with 74,500 other people. As Garth would say, some things are better left to chance, and such is the case with this homily. It was written in the course of the concert, sort of.

I’m always thinking theologically and liturgically. I’m sort of a spiritual nerd that way. So, of course I went to Garth Brooks and found a homily. It turns out that a Garth Brooks concert has a lot to teach us about the Mass and about the life of faith that Jesus wants to share with us. Enjoy.
